What Are the Different Types of Cocktails?

Cocktails are categorized into different types based on:

  • The base spirit or spirits used.
  • The flavor profile.
  • The formula used.
  • The types of sweeteners, seasonings, and sour elements.

Some of the different types of cocktails include:

  • Sours: Sours combine some type of citrus juice, a type of liquor, like whiskey, and sometimes a sweetener.
  • Margaritas: Margaritas usually consist of tequila, orange liquor, and lime juice and are served in a glass with a salted rim.
  • Daiquiris: Daiquiris typically combine fruit juice with rum and a sweetener.
  • Highballs: Highballs are a base liquor, like gin, combined with a mixer, such as soda, tonic water, or soda water.
  • Tropical drinks: Tropical drinks combine tropical fruit juices, like pineapple, with rum and other tropical flavors, like coconut, to create drinks, like a piña colada or a Mai Tai.
  • Negronis: Negronis combines vermouth, gin, and Campari for a sweet-sour flavor profile.
  • Martinis: Martinis are made using either vodka or gin, along with dry vermouth, and sometimes other flavors, such as chocolate or coffee.
  • Fizzes: Fizzes start with a base liquor, add a mixer, and are finished with a frothy, fizzy texture, using egg whites or another fizzing component.
  • Old Fashioneds: An Old Fashioned generally consists of bitters, whiskey, citrus peel, and a sweetener.
  • Manhattans: A Manhattan combines sweet vermouth, bitters, and some type of whisky, usually a rye or bourbon.
  • Champagne cocktails: Champagne cocktails are made using sparkling wine or champagne, fruit juices, and other liquors. Mimosas are one of the most well-known champagne cocktails.

Which Cocktails Are Best for Different Occasions or Seasons?

The time of year can influence what types of cocktails are best. There are different favorites you may want to sample during each season:

  • Spring: Springtime cocktails often feature various berries and herbs, and include mint juleps, spring sangrias, and Moscow mules.
  • Summer: As the weather turns hot, people crave cooling cocktails, such as strawberry spritzers, watermelon margaritas, frozen fruit daiquiris, vodka sweet tea, and piña coladas.
  • Fall: Fall flavors include pumpkin spice, apple, and cinnamon. Cocktails during this season can include apple Manhattans, pumpkin pie martinis, and whisky sour apple cider.
  • Winter: As the weather turns cold and the holiday season arrives, people want drinks that warm them up from the inside, such as hot butter rum, mulled wine, hot toddies, or peppermint schnapps hot chocolate.

For different occasions, it will depend on what is being celebrated. For example, margaritas are an excellent choice for celebrating Cinco de Mayo, while summer birthday celebrations could feature piña coladas, frozen margaritas, or daiquiris. Two of the most popular drinks when enjoying brunch, any time of the year, are Bloody Marys and mimosas.

How Do You Choose a Cocktail Based on Your Taste Preferences?

To choose a cocktail based on your taste preferences, you need to start by considering what flavors you enjoy, such as:

  • Sweet
  • Bitter
  • Sour
  • Spicy
  • Savory

Next, you need to decide what type of liquor you prefer and whether you want a strong or light alcohol flavor. For example, vodka generally has a neutral flavor unless it is a flavored vodka, so it is great when you want other flavors to be more noticeable. Whereas cocktails with whiskey allow you to savor the taste of the whiskey as it is more spirit-forward.

If you are unsure of what to try, ask your mixologist for some recommendations based on your preferences.

Which Cocktails Have Lower Alcohol Content?

Cocktails containing vermouth, Aperol, and sparkling wines generally have lower alcohol content. For instance, an Americano is similar to a Negroni but doesn’t have gin and uses soda water. Spritzers are another option with lower alcohol content, like an Aperol spritz cocktail, which combines prosecco, Aperol, and soda water. Some liquor brands also offer lower-proof spirits that can be used to make classic cocktails.

What Are the Most Famous Classic Cocktails?

Classic cocktails are the drinks most people are familiar with because they have been around for a considerable time.

Some of the most famous classic cocktails include:

  • Daiquris
  • Manhattans
  • Mojitos
  • Piña Coladas
  • Bloody Marys
  • Old Fashioneds
  • Margaritas
  • Negroni
  • Gin and Tonics
  • Whiskey Sours
  • Mimosas
